Our Festive Theme - 1700 Years of Christianity Armenia hold the distinction of being the first nation to declare Christianity as its state religion, in 301 A.D. They have the oldest Christian Cathedral in existence. Christianity was preached in Armenia by the apostles Thadeus and Bartholomew some 30 years after the resurrection of Christ. For Armenians year 2001 marks the 1700 years of walking in the light of Lord, Jesus Christ, as a nation. Christianity influenced many developments in Armenian culture, specifically architecture. Replacing pagan temples with the first churches, Christian influences created architectural masterpieces such as the churches of Hripsime, Gayane and the gem of 7th Century Armenian architecture, Zvartnots. Many scholars believe that Armenian churches were the prototype of the Gothic style of architecture. According to some, 4th century Armenian architects were the first to introduce the square building with a single dome and niches which serve as abutments in the longitudinal, transverse and diagonal axes. Pope Visits Armenia The Supreme Pontiff, Pope John Paul II arrives in Armenia September 25 at the invitation of president Robert Kocharian and the head of the Armenian Church Catholicos Karekin II on the occasion of festivities, dedicated to 17 centuries of Armenia's conversion to Christianity.
